چکیده
We consider a repeated interaction between a long-run player and a sequence of short-run players, in which the long-run player may either be rational or may be a mechanical type who plays the same (possibly mixed) action in every stage game. We depart from the classic model, exemplified by Fudenberg and Levine [4, 5], in assuming that the short-run players make inferences by analogical reasoning, meaning that they correctly identify the average strategy of each type of long-run player, but do not recognize how this play varies across histories. Concentrating on 2 × 2 games, we provide a complete characterization of equilibrium payoffs, establishing a payoff bound for the rational long-run player that can be strictly larger than the familiar “Stackelberg” bound. We also provide a complete characterization of equilibrium behavior, showing that play begins with either a reputation-building or (depending on parameters) a reputation-spending stage, followed by a reputation-manipulation stage. ∗We thank Olivier Compte, Drew Fudenberg, Rani Spiegler, and Asher Wolinsky for helpful discussions. This study examined whether or not on-line learning (on-line as compared to classroom) influenced the progression of scientific concept construction and analogical reasoning ability; and the degree to which different analogical reasoning (surface and relational salience) contributes to the progression of scientific concept construction and analogical reasoning ability. A total of 190 5 grade st...
متن کاملPerforming Strategy: Analogical Reasoning as a Strategic Practice
Imagination Lab Foundation researchers communicate their findings to interested readers through the Working Paper publication series. This paper should be considered preliminary in nature and subject to subsequent revision. ABSTRACT Analogical reasoning refers to the successful transfer of structural similarities from a source to a target domain. In strategic management research, this concept h...
متن کاملAbstract analogical reasoning in high-functioning children with autism spectrum disorders.
Children with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) exhibit a deficit in spontaneously recognizing abstract similarities that are crucial for generalizing learning to new situations. This may contribute to deficits in the development of appropriate schemas for navigating novel situations, including social interactions. Analogical reasoning is the central cognitive mechanism that enables typically dev...
متن کاملTwo Kinds of Non-monotonic Analogical Inference Two Kinds of Non-monotonic Analogical Inference ?
This paper addresses two modi of analogical reasoning. The rst modus is based on the explicit representation of the justiication for the analogical inference. The second modus is based on the representation of typical instances by concept structures. The two kinds of analogical inferences rely on diierent forms of relevance knowledge that cause non-monotonicity. While the uncertainty and non-mo...
متن کاملApplying analogical reasoning to introductory-level synthesis problems
This study compared the effect of two types of interventions on subsequent student performance with a target synthesis problem. Students either solved two single-concept problems (priming) or compared worked solutions across one of four different analogical reasoning conditions. These four conditions varied according to the type of examples compared (single-concept vs. synthesis) and structural...
